East St. Louis Man Sentenced on Firearm Offense Following Investigation by W.A.V.E Detail

A. Courtney Cox, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, announced today that on August 20, 2010, TYRONE HARLAN, age 31, of East St. Louis, Illinois, was sentenced to 70 months’ imprisonment following his plea of guilty to the charge of possession of firearms while a felon.

At the time of his guilty plea, HARLAN entered into a factual stipulation which indicated that on December 12, 2009, members of the W.A.V.E. detail searched his home on 55th Street in East St. Louis. The search revealed two rifles and two revolvers, one with an obliterated serial number. At the time he possessed the weapons, HARLAN was a felon, having previously been convicted of a felony in St. Clair County, Illinois.

Following service of his term of imprisonment, HARLAN will be on supervised release for a term of three years. In the federal system, parole has been abolished. While inmates may earn time off for good behavior, they nevertheless must generally serve at least 85 percent of their sentences.

HARLAN has been in custody since his arrest on the Indictment February 24, 2010.

The case resulted from the efforts of the W.A.V.E. (Working Against Violent Elements) Task Force, which focuses its efforts on combating violent crime in East St. Louis, Washington Park, and surrounding communities. W.A.V.E. was formed in November, 2009, and is a collaboration of law enforcement officers from the Illinois State Police, the Metropolitan Enforcement Group of Southwestern Illinois (MEGSI), the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department, the East St. Louis Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the United States Marshals Service. The W.A.V.E. Task Force receives financial support through the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, a nationwide federal program which endeavors to address gun-related violence.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Kelly B. Lake and Suzanne M. Garrison.
