Springfield FBI Investigation Results in Forfeiture Awarded to Douglas County Sheriff's Office

FBI Springfield June 09, 2010
  • Special Agent Marshall Stone (217) 522-9675

Stuart McArthur, FBI Special Agent in Charge of the Springfield Division, announced that the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) is receiving $38,086.72 in forfeited criminal proceeds. The money was seized by the DCSO in July, 2008, during the Lonnie W. Lynch investigation. The Sheriff’s Office requested FBI assistance with the investigation, resulting in the initiation of federal forfeiture proceedings against the seized money. In April, 2009, Lynch pled guilty to two felony counts of practicing medicine without a license.

On June 01, 2010, a federal declaration of forfeiture was issued, authorizing the DCSO to receive the $38,086.72, which may be utilized by the Sheriff’s Department.

The Comprehensive Crime Control Act of 1984 directs the Attorney General of the United States to ensure the equitable sharing of forfeited property to state and local law enforcement agencies who participate in an investigation that results in the seizure of assets. The forfeited assets may be used by the state or local law enforcement agency to offset law enforcement expenses, such as equipment, training, or other expenses. State and local asset seizures may be processed for forfeiture in the federal system through the federal forfeiture adoption program. By combining resources, state, local, and federal agencies are better positioned to combat crime in a way that is most beneficial to the communities that we serve.
