Springfield Man Sentenced for Bank Robberies in Decatur and Sherman

URBANA, IL—A Springfield man, Stephen D. Wacaser, 58, was sentenced today to a total prison term of 199 months (16 years, seven months) for robberies of banks in Decatur and Sherman, Illinois. Wacaser has remained in law enforcement custody since his arrest on October 27, 2009.
On Dec. 16, 2009, Wacaser pled guilty to the offenses: the robbery of Regions Bank, 1355 W. King, Decatur, Illinois, on Oct. 19, 2009, and of Illini Bank, 2629 E. Andrew Road, Sherman, on Oct. 20, 2009.
Wacaser’s federal prison sentence includes a term of 151 months (12 years, seven months) for the two robberies committed in October 2009 and two additional terms of 24 months for each of two violations of federal mandatory supervised release in the Central District of Illinois. The sentences are to be served consecutively for a total term of 199 months. At the time Wacaser committed the bank robberies in October 2009, he was under federal supervised release for the offenses of bank larceny and bank robbery.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Decatur and Sherman Police Departments, and the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Colin S. Bruce prosecuted the case in the Urbana Division of the Central District of Illinois.
