Arrest of Jesus Naranjo-Adorno for Kidnapping and Brandishing a Firearm in Furtherance of a Crime of Violence

SAN JUAN, PR—Special Agent in Charge Douglas A. Leff of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), San Juan Field Office, announced the arrest of JESUS NARANJO-ADORNO.

On July 3, 2016, the FBI charged and arrested NARANJO-ADORNO for kidnapping and brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.

On June 2, 2016, at approximately 12:30 p.m. NARANJO-ADORNO and six unidentified males abducted a 20 year old female and her child from a residence in the San Juan metropolitan area. NARANJO-ADORNO and five of the unidentified males were brandishing hand guns and one of them had a long gun. NARANJO-ADORNO and the six unidentified males forced the female and her son into a grey Toyota Highlander which was followed by a second vehicle described as a small dark car.

On June 3, 2016, members of the FBI SWAT team and Police of Puerto Rico (POPR) Bank Robbery Unit located and arrested NARANJO-ADORNO. The arrest took place in the room of a motel located on road PR-1 from Rio Piedras to Caguas. The female and her son were unharmed.

The investigation continues with respect to six accomplices who assisted in the kidnapping. The identities of these accomplices are being aggressively sought, and therefore each of these individuals has a limited window of time to voluntarily contact the FBI to request leniency before we find them on our own, take them into custody, and ask the United States Attorney to seek the maximum punishment available under federal law.

The immediate response and rescue of the victims by the FBI and Police of Puerto Rico should serve as a reminder to those considering committing an act of violence in Puerto Rico: If you strike, we will quickly assemble a team of the best investigators, analysts, and prosecutors in the business to track you down and see that you serve a lengthy prison sentence.

If convicted, the defendant faces up to life imprisonment. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) Aaron Howell, and investigated by the FBI.

The public is reminded a criminal complaint contains only charges and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed to be innocent until and unless proven guilty. The U.S. government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
