SAN FRANCISCO, CA—Robert Terrell Pleasant was sentenced Monday to 77 months in prison for selling crack cocaine in San Francisco ’s Tenderloin District, United States Attorney Joseph P. Russoniello announced.

Pleasant pleaded guilty on November 11, 2008 to one violation of 21 United States Code, section 841(a), possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute it. According to the plea agreement, Pleasant admitted to selling a rock of crack cocaine to someone in the area of Market and Taylor Streets in San Francisco and having 45 more rocks of crack cocaine hidden in his pants when police arrested him. The weight of the crack cocaine seized from Pleasant exceeded 12 grams.

Pleasant, a 33 year-old resident of the city of Alameda, Calif., was indicted by a federal grand jury on October 30, 2008. The indictment charged the defendant with two counts: one count of distribution of crack cocaine and one count of possession of crack cocaine with the intent to distribute it. Both counts charged are a violation of 21 U.S.C. section 841(a).

The prosecution is one of several federal prosecutions filed against recidivist street-level drug dealers arrested in San Francisco. It is the result of Operation Helping Hand, a United States Attorney program that targets recidivist drug dealers in neighborhoods and communities plagued by drug dealing and the resulting violence that activity brings with it.

Pleasant was in jail at the time of sentencing and is being transferred to the Bureau of Prisons to serve out his sentence. U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel handed down the sentence. Judge Patel also imposed a four year period of supervised release on Pleasant, which will follow his incarceration.

Gregg W. Lowder is the Assistant U.S. Attorney who is prosecuting the case with the assistance of Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew L. McCarthy and Legal Assistant Rawaty Yim. The prosecution is the result of an investigation by the San Francisco Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
