FBI and San Diego Police Department Seek the Public’s Assistance to Identify Union Bank Robber

The FBI and San Diego Police Department are seeking the public’s assistance to identify the unknown male responsible for robbing the Union Bank branch located at 1201 Fifth Avenue in San Diego, California, on Thursday, August 13, 2015.

On Thursday, August 13, 2015 at approximately 1:52 p.m. an unknown male (hereinafter referred to as the robber) entered the Union Bank branch located at 1201 Fifth Avenue in San Diego, California and robbed one of the tellers. Investigation conducted to date has determined that at approximately 1:46 p.m., the robber is observed smoking a cigarette outside the bank standing near an ATM. The robber walks away from the ATM and away from the bank’s entry doors. At approximately 1:52 p.m., the robber is observed entering the bank and approaching the victim teller’s window. The robber makes a verbal demand for money in a low voice and gestures to the teller to provide him money. The teller complies with the robber’s demands and provides him with a sum of money. Upon receiving a sum of money, the robber collects the money and puts the money in his pocket. The robber exits the bank through the B street lobby door and was last seen walking eastbound away from the bank. No injuries were reported, and no weapon was observed. The robber has been dubbed the “Whispering Bandit” because he allegedly whispered his verbal demands to the victim teller.

Witnesses described the robber as follows:

  • Sex: Male
  • Race: White (olive complexion)
  • Height: Approximately 5’11” tall
  • Build: Thin
  • Eyes: Light brown (scab on left eye lid)
  • Age: Early 40s
  • Clothing: Short-sleeved black T-shirt with a Statue of Liberty design on the front and blue jeans
