Woman Arrested and Charged with Robbing Two San Diego Banks

San Diego FBI Special Agent in Charge Keith Slotter announces the arrest of Jaquett Ebony Darby, age 31.

Jaquett Ebony Darby was arrested on Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at approximately 2:00 p.m. in the vicinity of the 3800 block of Teak Street, San Diego, California. Darby was taken into custody by San Diego Police detectives and FBI agents. Darby was arrested pursuant to a federal arrest warrant charging her with two counts of bank robbery.

On Monday, July 25, 2011, a complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court, Southern District, of California, charging Darby with two counts of bank robbery. The complaint charges Darby with robbing the following banks.

(1) U.S. Bank, 3201 University Avenue, San Diego, California, on Saturday, July 9, 2011.

(2) U.S. Bank, 14340 Penasquitos Drive, San Diego, California, on Tuesday, July 19, 2011.

According to the complaint, on Saturday, July 9, 2011, at approximately 11:19 a.m., the U.S. Bank, at 3201 University Avenue, San Diego, California, was robbed by an unknown black female wearing a tan wide-brim summer hat, green dress, sunglasses, approximately 5’11” tall, 200 - 240 lbs., using a demand note paraphrased, “GIVE ME THE MONEY OR DIE.” The victim teller complied with the robber’s demands and provided her with a sum of money. The robber left the bank after receiving the money.

On Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at approximately 10:00 a.m. the U.S. Bank, at 14340 Penasquitos Drive, San Diego, California, was robbed by an unknown female wearing a green sundress, sunglasses, approximately 5’7” - 5’8” tall, 210 lbs., using a demand note which stated, “Money Now or Die!!” The robber was provided a sum of money and left the bank.

On Wednesday, July 20, 2011, the FBI issued a news release to the media seeking the public’s assistance to identify the unknown female responsible for robbing the above two banks. The news release contained bank surveillance photographs from both robberies. As a result, multiple individuals recognized Darby from the bank surveillance photographs which led to her identification.

On Monday, July 25, 2011, a federal complaint was filed in U.S. District Court, Southern District of California, charging Darby with two counts of bank robbery. Darby was arrested the following day, July 26, 2011, on federal bank robbery charges.

Darby is currently being held at the San Diego County Sheriff’s Vista Detention Center. Darby is expected to have her initial appearance before a U.S. Magistrate Judge, on or about Thursday, July 28, 2011. This case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. This matter is being investigated by the San Diego Police Department, the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, the Chula Vista Police Department, and the FBI.

An arrest itself is not evidence that the defendant committed the crimes charged. The defendant is presumed innocent until the government meets its burden in court of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
