FBI and San Diego Police Department Announce Arrest in the “Dapper Bandit” Bank Robbery Investigation

The FBI and San Diego Police Department are announcing the arrest of John Richard Martinez, age 41, of Fresno, California, in connection with the “Dapper Bandit” bank robbery investigation.

John Richard Martinez was taken into custody by San Diego Police Department Robbery Detectives and an FBI agent on Friday, December 31, 2010, after he was detained at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, by U.S. Customs Border Protection Officers. Martinez was stopped at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, at approximately 6:00 p.m., after he attempted to enter the United States from Mexico. U.S. Customs Border Protection Officers detained Martinez, based on an alert entered into a law enforcement database by local investigators.

Martinez was transported from the San Ysidro Port of Entry to San Diego Police Department Headquarters where he was interviewed, fingerprinted, and photographed.

Martinez was subsequently booked into the San Diego Central Jail, 1173 Front Street, San Diego, California, on the following local robbery charges:

  1. USA Payday Advance, 10825 Westview Parkway, San Diego, California, on Monday, December 20, 2010.
  2. US Bank, 2150 Chatsworth Boulevard, San Diego, California, on Monday, December 27, 2010.

During the US Bank robbery on Monday, December 27, 2010, Martinez is alleged to have entered the US Bank, 2150 Chatsworth Boulevard, San Diego, California, at approximately 9:40 a.m., and robbed one of the tellers armed with a black semi-automatic pistol.

The “Dapper Bandit” investigation currently involves the following known and unknown robberies:

  1. Bank of America, Fresno, California, on November 17, 2010.
  2. Rabobank, Tulare, California, on December 17, 2010.
  3. Unknown bank robbery, Thousand Oaks, California, November - December 2010.
  4. Unknown strong-armed robbery of a pedestrian in the parking lot area of Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino, 17225 Jersey Avenue, Lemoore, CA.
  5. USA Checks Cashed, 10825 Westview Parkway, San Diego, California, on Monday, December 20, 2010.
  6. US Bank, 2150 Chatsworth Boulevard, San Diego, California, on Monday, December 27, 2010.

On Monday, December 27, 2010, the FBI issued a news release to the local media seeking information from the public concerning the “Dapper Bandit.” Based on local media disseminating this information to the public, information was received by the FBI and SDPD which assisted in this investigation.

Martinez is expected to be arraigned in State Superior Court, Central Division, 220 West Broadway, San Diego, California, on Monday, January 3, 2011. This case is being prosecuted by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office. Booking information concerning Martinez may be viewed at www.sdsheriff.net.
