San Diego FBI Special Agent in Charge Keith Slotter announces the arrest of Cathy Rae Salmond, age 30, as a result of the investigation into the robbery of the Bank of the West, El Cajon, California, on Friday, July 22, 2011.

Cathy Rae Salmond was arrested on Thursday, July 28, 2011, at approximately 12:30 p.m. in the vicinity of the 500 block of North Mollison, El Cajon, California. Salmond was taken into custody by El Cajon Police Officers on a misdemeanor warrant unrelated to the bank robbery. Salmond was transported to El Cajon Police Department Headquarters where she was interviewed by an El Cajon Police detective and an FBI agent. Salmond was later booked into the Las Colinas Detention Facility.

On Friday, July 29, 2011, a complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of California, charging Salmond with one count of bank robbery. The complaint charges Salmond with robbing the Bank of the West, 1234 East Main Street, El Cajon, California, on Friday, July 22, 2011.

According to the complaint, on Friday, July 22, 2011, at approximately 3:50 p.m. the Bank of the West, 1234 East Main Street, El Cajon, California, was robbed by an unknown white female wearing dark sunglasses and a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt with the hood over her head. The female walked up to the victim teller and handed over a demand note asking for money. The note indicated that the female suspect’s son was being held hostage and demanded all of the teller’s money. The bank suffered a loss of less than $400.

On Saturday, July 23, 2011, the FBI issued a news release to the media seeking the public’s assistance to identify the unknown female responsible for robbing the Bank of the West. The news release contained bank surveillance photographs taken during the robbery. The suspect’s photograph was aired on local television stations, appeared in newspapers and posted online to a number of media websites.

As a direct result of the media dissemination, several calls were received identifying Salmond as the Bank of the West robber.

On Monday, August 01, 2011, Salmond was transported from the Las Colinas Detention Facility to the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC), Salmond will remain in custody at MCC pending her initial appearance before a U.S. Magistrate Judge, on Tuesday, August 2, 2011. This case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

An arrest itself is not evidence that the defendant committed the crimes charged. The defendant is presumed innocent until the government meets its burden in court of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
