Man Wanted in Connection with a Series of San Francisco-Area Bank Robberies Linked to the Clean Cut Bandit Arrested at Sunset Boulevard Hotel

An alleged bank robbery suspect wanted by authorities in northern California was arrested in Los Angeles today following a joint investigation among federal and local authorities, announced David J. Johnson, special agent in charge of the FBI’s San Francisco Field Office; David Bowdich, the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office; and Monica M. Miller, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Sacramento Field Office.

Darius Gilbert, 48, was arrested early this morning at a hotel in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles by FBI agents without incident.

Last month, a press release was issued in San Francisco to seek the public’s assistance in learning the identity and/or whereabouts of a bank robbery suspect believed to be linked to at least seven bank robberies in the cities of San Francisco and Antioch. At the time, the unidentified suspect was known as the “Clean Cut Bandit” based on descriptions of his appearance. Witnesses described the suspect as having brandished a knife during some of the robberies and a handgun in more recent robberies. Since that time, the suspect had been linked to an additional two robberies.

Gilbert was identified as the suspect in the series of robberies that occurred over an approximate period of two months, and an arrest warrant was issued in United States District Court in San Francisco.

Recently, investigators determined that Gilbert was located in the Los Angeles area and that he had been staying at the Bel Air area hotel.

Gilbert is scheduled to have an initial appearance in United States District Court in Los Angeles this afternoon.

This investigation is being conducted jointly by the FBI’s San Francisco Field Office; the FBI’s Sacramento Field Office; the San Francisco Police Department; the Antioch Police Department; the Elk Grove Police Department; and the San Rafael Police Department. The FBI’s Los Angeles Office assisted investigators with the arrest.

The United States Attorney’s Office in San Francisco is prosecuting this case.
