United States Attorney Julia C. Dudley announced today that two federal inmates currently serving prison sentences at United States Penitentiary Lee have been sentenced to serve additional federal time after separate incidents involving the illegal possession of a weapon.

Clarence Shambry, age 28, and Maurice Tyler, age 36, were both sentenced in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Big Stone Gap on January 22, 2009, for separate occurrences of being in possession of an illegal weapon. Both defendants pled guilty to the charges against them at an earlier hearing.

Shambry, who was sentenced in December 2003, to 92 months of incarceration by the District of New Jersey for being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon, was scheduled to be released in November 2009. He was sentenced to serve an additional 30 months of federal incarceration following his most recent conviction.

According to evidence provided by Special Assistant United States Attorney Debbie Stevens, on July 31, 2008, Shambry was found to be in possession of a shank/weapon while attempting to clear a metal detector at USP Lee. A pat search of the inmate resulted in the discovery of a nine and one-half inch piece of steel, sharpened to a point. The shank was wrapped on one end with a brown glove and secured with a boot lace.

In a separate incident, Tyler, who is serving a 280 month prison term out of the Souther District of Indiana for being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon, was scheduled to be released in September 2018. The inmate sentenced to an additional 30 months in federal prison for his latest action.

According to SAUSA Stevens, on April 26, 2008, Tyler was found to have possessed a shank/weapon while in his cell. When approached by an officer from USP Lee, the inmate dropped the weapon into his pants. The officer removed the weapon, which was found to be a eight and one-half inch aluminum shank with a black string handle and red and yellow tape.

Both investigations were handled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Special Investigative Unit of the Bureau of Prisons. Special Assistant United States Attorney Debbie Stevens prosecuted the cases for the United States.
