Mollie Halpern: The FBI is seeing an increase in cases involving spying from foreign intelligence agencies, criminals, and others who wish America harm.

C. Frank Figliuzzi: As long as America has what other nations want, as long as there are foreign intelligence services willing to do anything to get it, we’re going to see an increase in economic espionage.

Halpern: I’m Mollie Halpern of the Bureau, and this is FBI, This Week. Economic espionage has evolved since the Cold War; technology has contributed to that change. These days we’re increasingly seeing what we call the insider threat. Assistant Director of the Counterintelligence Division Frank Figliuzzi…

Figliuzzi: We’re seeing insiders and people recently separated from firms, we’re seeing those people targeted through a variety of means or they themselves volunteering to a foreign intelligence service—not realizing they’re getting in way over their heads.

Halpern: Economic espionage is a threat to the economy, making it a national security issue.

Figliuzzi: In the FBI’s pending caseload, we’re looking at close to $14 billion in losses.
