Repeat Bank Robber Sentenced to 89 Months in Federal Prison

U.S. Attorney’s Office October 13, 2011
  • District of Oregon (503) 727-1000

EUGENE, OR—On October 13, 2011, John Hall Cleaves, 39, was sentenced by U.S. District Chief Judge Ann Aiken to 89 months in federal prison. Cleaves was sentenced to 65 months for the bank robbery and to a 24-month consecutive sentence for the violation of his supervised release. Cleaves was ordered to pay full restitution. Upon his release from prison, Cleaves will be on supervised release for three years.

On June 1, 2010, Cleaves entered the Umpqua Bank located at 1175 Valley River Center Drive in Eugene, Oregon. Cleaves approached the teller, stated that he was robbing her and demanded money. After the defendant received $1,240, he left the bank, discarded his jacket, and went to the Valley River Mall, where he purchased clothes and shoes. Cleaves changed into the purchased items and discarded his remaining clothes. He was later arrested outside of the mall.

Cleaves was on supervised release at the time of the Valley River bank robbery, after a 2003 conviction in federal court in California for 11 counts of bank robbery.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Eugene Police Department, and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey S. Sweet.
