FBI Portland January 12, 2011
  • Beth Anne Steele (503) 460-8099

The FBI and the Salem Police Department are asking the public’s assistance in identifying the man responsible for a robbery at a Salem bank at 12:46 p.m. on Wednesday, January 12, 2011. The man walked into the U.S. Bank branch located at 3485 Commercial Street South, brandished a silver handgun, and announced that he was robbing the bank. Witnesses say he threatened that an accomplice would shoot any police officers responding if they notified authorities. Once he received money from each of the tellers, he was seen leaving the bank on foot. It is possible that he had a car stashed nearby.

Witnesses describe the man as:

Race: White/ slight tan
Age: late 30s to early 40s
Height: 5’10”
Weight/Build: 240 pounds/stocky
Hair: Dark brown or black

Clothing: Black and purple winter zip-up coat with the hood up. Possibly wearing a black baseball or beanie cap. Wearing clear glasses, possibly prescription glasses.

Investigators are working to determine whether an accomplice was on scene. No one was hurt, and no shots were fired.

Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI in Salem at (503) 362-6601 during normal business hours; the FBI in Portland at (503) 224-4181, 24 hours a day; or the Salem Police Department at (503) 588-6123.
