Crafton Man Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison for Shooting a Teller During a Bank Robbery

PITTSBURGH, PA—A resident of Crafton, Pa., has been sentenced in federal court to 25 years in prison to be followed by five years of supervised release on his conviction of violating the federal firearms laws, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.

United States District Judge Donetta W. Ambrose imposed the sentence on David Mathis, 47.

According to information presented to the court, on or about Jan. 8, 2010, Mathis discharged a firearm, namely, a Glock 26, 9mm pistol, during the commission of a bank robbery at the Westmoreland County Federal Credit Union located in Hempfield Township.

When Mathis entered the credit union, he fired one round from the 9mm handgun. The bullet traveled through a computer monitor and struck a teller in the chest. Mathis discharged another round from the 9mm handgun, which lodged in the wall behind the teller stations. While in the credit union, Mathis struck another teller in the head with the gun. Prior to fleeing the credit union in the getaway vehicle, Mathis fired an additional two rounds from the 9mm handgun in the direction of a patron’s vehicle that was blocking his escape.

Assistant United States Attorney Amy L. Johnston prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.

U.S. Attorney Hickton commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pennsylvania State Police for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of David Mathis.
