U.S. Attorney’s Office March 15, 2010
  • Southern District of West Virginia (304) 345-2200

HUNTINGTON, WV—David Ryan Adkins, 27, of Florida, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers to 51 months in prison for possession with intent to distribute oxycodone. Adkins pled guilty to the Federal drug charge in December 2009. The conviction stems from an investigation conducted by the Kenova Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. On January 2, 2009, the Kenova Police Department executed a search warrant at a Wayne County residence where Adkins was residing. The search yielded two sets of electronic scales, a drug ledger, over $3,100 in cash, approximately 83 prescription pills, a handgun, and ammunition. Assistant United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston handled the prosecution.

Also in Huntington, Judge Chambers sentenced Sean Bradsher, 27, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, to 15 months in prison for possession with intent to distribute cocaine base. Bradsher previously pled guilty in December 2009, admitting he possessed crack cocaine which he intended to distribute. The conviction stems from a traffic stop conducted by a Putnam County sheriff's deputy on May 15, 2008. The deputy seized three grams of cocaine base which Bradsher admitted he planned to distribute to others. Assistant United States Attorney John J. Frail handled the prosecution.

A Wayne County man was sentenced today by Judge Chambers for stealing a firearm. Joshua W. Smithson, 26, was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison. Smithson previously pled guilty in December, admitting he stole a Remington rifle on December 1, 2008, from a Federal firearms Licensee located in Wayne, West Virginia. The firearm was subsequently recovered by the West Virginia State Police. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the West Virginia State Police jointly conducted the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston handled the prosecution.

In an unrelated case, a Huntington man pleaded guilty today before Judge Chambers to stealing a firearm. Jeffory Harrison, 21, faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced on July 6, 2010. In November 2008, Harrison stole a .32 caliber revolver from a residence in Lesage, Cabell County, West Virginia. Harrison stipulated in his plea agreement that he obliterated the serial number on the stolen firearm, and that he was an unlawful user of controlled substances when he possessed the revolver. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Huntington Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston is handling the prosecution.
