Phoenix Man Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Bank Robbery

U.S. Attorney’s Office August 24, 2010
  • District of Arizona (602) 514-7500

PHOENIX—Raul Rodriguez, Jr., 37, of Phoenix, was sentenced Monday to 10 years in federal prison by U.S. District Judge James A. Teilborg for one count of armed bank robbery. Rodriguez pleaded guilty in May 2010 to the bank robbery. Following his release from federal prison, Rodriguez will be on federal supervised release for five additional years.

The facts showed that on January 20, 2010, Rodriguez entered the Chase Bank located at 2837 North 75th Avenue in Phoenix with an air handgun, wrote a note that said, “Armor piercing bullets put money in bag,” and approached the teller with the note. When the teller hesitated, Rodriguez displayed the air gun to the teller. The teller then complied and gave Rodriguez the money. Rodriguez, who had just been released from an Arizona state prison a month earlier after serving a 15-year sentence for multiple armed robberies, was apprehended shortly thereafter. All but $1.62 of the stolen money (which Rodriguez used to buy a soft drink after he robbed the bank) and the air gun were recovered.

The investigation in this case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and its Bank Robbery Task Force. The Bank Robbery Task Force is a partnership of FBI, the Phoenix Police Department, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, the Mesa Police Department, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, whose focus is to investigate and apprehend bank robbers in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The prosecution was handled by Alison S. Bachus, Assistant U.S. Attorney, District of Arizona, Phoenix.
