Tucson Man Sentenced to 71 Months for Bank Robbery

TUCSON, AZ—Timothy Arnold Riley, 42, of Tucson, Ariz., was sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Judge Cindy K. Jorgenson to 71 months’ imprisonment for bank robbery. Upon completion of his prison term, Riley will be monitored on supervised release for 36 months. Riley was also ordered to pay restitution for the outstanding stolen money. Riley pleaded guilty to the counts on April 23, 2010.

“The Tucson Police Department and the FBI’s teamwork demonstrates that we are more effective in protecting the community and investigating crime when we work with local law enforcement,” said U.S. Attorney Dennis K. Burke.“ Today’s sentence sends a clear message to other would be bank robbers that our law enforcement partners will find them and we will prosecute them. Justice was served today.”

On July 15, 2008, Riley entered the Wells Fargo Bank branch at 7171 E. Tanque Verde Road in Tucson. He waited in the customer service line and when called to a line, sat down at the desk. He placed a manila envelope on the desk and instructed the teller to put all the money in the envelope. He repeatedly demanded that the teller put all the money in the envelope. The teller complied, and Riley left the bank with the currency.

Riley went to a nearby restaurant and threw the envelope and the currency strap in the men’s room garbage can. He went next door to a drug store, and asked a cashier to give him a ride to the airport, and offer to pay her. She declined. Riley got a ride to a nearby hospital, and gave his name to the receptionist, as a potential alibi. He later asked someone to call a cab for him. He paid the cab driver for his ride to a nearby shuttle service. He purchased a fare to the Phoenix airport and was arrested by Tucson Police Department Officers while waiting for the shuttle.

Riley initially denied that he robbed the bank, but after he was shown his photo taken by bank security cameras while wearing the same clothing, he admitted committing the crime. Tucson Police Officers and FBI agents recovered most of stolen money at the time of Riley’s arrest, and from the shuttle and cab companies. The envelope and currency strap were recovered from the garbage.

Riley was previously convicted of bank robbery and forgery.

The investigation in this case was conducted by the FBI and the Tucson Police Department. The prosecution was handled by Sandra M. Hansen, Assistant U.S. Attorney, District of Arizona, Tucson.
