Navajo Brothers Sentenced to Federal Prison for Voluntary Manslaughter

PHOENIX—Truman D. Gishie, 21, of Ganado, Ariz., was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Mary H. Murguia to six years in federal prison for voluntary manslaughter. Truman D. Gishie is the last of three brothers to be sentenced in the group beating and killing of another Ganado resident. On November 25, 2009, brothers Gerrick J. and Martinez J. Gishie were also sentenced by Judge Murguia to seven-and-a-half and eight years in federal prison, respectively. This offense occurred on the Navajo Nation in Ganado, Ariz. Truman D. Gishie, the youngest of the three brothers, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter on February 25, 2010.

On June 29, 2008, brother and co-defendant Martinez J. Gishie had an altercation with the victim. He later rounded up three of his brothers, including co-defendant Gerrick J. Gishie and defendant Truman D. Gishie. They went to the victim’s home, where the four brothers pulled the victim out of his house and proceeded to assault him, resulting in his death.

The investigation in this case was conducted by the FBI. The prosecution was handled by Dimitra H. Sampson and Sharon K. Sexton, Assistant U.S. Attorneys, District of Arizona, Phoenix.
