Former Wyoming Valley Sanitation Authority Worker Sentenced to Community Confinement

U.S. Attorney’s Office November 24, 2009
  • Middle District of Pennsylvania (717) 221-4482

Dennis C. Pfannenschmidt, United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, announced that Karen Holly, 51, of West Pittston and former employee of the Wyoming Valley Sanitation Authority was sentenced to two years of probation to include 30 days to be served in community confinement today by United States District Court Judge A. Richard Caputo for theft of over $5,000 from the public funds held by the Wyoming Valley Sanitation Authority. Holly must also pay a $100 special assessment.

In announcing the latest development in this public corruption probe, Pfannenschmidt stated, “We are gratified by the fair and appropriate sentence imposed today by Judge Caputo. A public official who abuses her position for personal gain not only breaks the law, but also breaks the public trust. The lesson today is that no public official is above the law.”

This case is part of an on-going investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service and is being prosecuted by a team of federal prosecutors led by Senior Litigation Counsel Gordon Zubrod and includes Assistant U.S. Attorneys William Houser, Michael Consiglio, Amy Phillips and Criminal Division Chief Christian Fisanick. Pfannenschmidt praised this team of investigators and prosecutors for their tireless efforts on behalf of the people of Luzerne County.
