Alta Vista Man Pleads Guilty to Possessing Child Pornography

A man who possessed computer images of child pornography pled guilty today in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

Darrin Joseph Meirick, age 31, from Alta Vista, Iowa, was convicted of two counts of possession of child pornography.

In a plea agreement, Meirick admitted that, on April 4, 2008, and September 23, 2008, he possessed at least 150 computer images of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. The images included prepubescent minors engaged in sadistic sexual conduct.

Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Meirick was taken into custody by the United States Marshal after the guilty plea and will remain in custody pending sentencing. Meirick faces a possible maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment, a $500,000 fine, $200 in special assessments, and supervised release following any imprisonment for at least five years and up to life. He will also be required to register as a sex offender.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Peter Deegan and was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Chickasaw County, Iowa, Sheriff's Office.
