Two Defendants Sentenced for Bank Larcency Involving Armored Car

DAVENPORT, IA—James T. Hohlfeld, age 26, of Moline, Illinois, and Dylan T. Trones, age 25, of Sparta, Wisconsin, both were sentenced by United States District Court Judge James E. Gritzner on federal charges of bank larceny and interstate transportation of stolen money, announced U.S. Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt. Both men pleaded guilty on March 19, 2010, to stealing money belonging to U.S. Bank. Hohlfeld also pleaded guilty to transporting stolen money across state lines, from Iowa to Illinois and to Wisconsin.

Hohlfeld was sentenced to 27 months in prison, a three-year period of supervised release, and a $200 special assessment to the Crime Victims Fund. Trones was sentenced to 23 months in prison, a three-year period of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Crime Victim’s Fund. Both Hohlfeld and Trones were ordered to forfeit recovered cash of $103,516, and a motorcycle. Both were found jointly and severally liable for restitution in the amount of $158,672.

On Friday, March 19, 2010, while armored car guards were inside a U.S. Bank ATM in Davenport, Iowa, Hohlfeld and Trones approached the unoccupied armored car. Hohlfeld entered the vehicle from the front passenger door and once inside released and unlocked a side door of the armored vehicle. After Trones entered the side door, both thieves took about $261,000 and fled the area, first to Illinois and then drove to Wisconsin.

After an investigation by the FBI identified Hohlfeld and Trones as the thieves, they were both arrested on March 31, 2010—Hohlfeld in Moline, Illinois, and Trones in Sparta, Wisconsin.
