Ray Edward Lee Sentenced to 20 Years for Two Des Moines Bank Robberies

DES MOINES, IA—On September 24, 2010, Ray Edward Lee, age 51, who was on supervised release at the time of the robberies, was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment for two counts of bank robbery and violating supervised release. Lee will also have to serve three years of supervised release after he is released from custody, and was ordered to pay an assessment of $200.00 to the Crime Victims Fund, announced U.S. Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt. United States District Judge James E. Gritzner also ordered Mr. Lee to pay $3,335.00 in restitution.

As part of his guilty plea agreement on June 24, 2010, Lee admitted that on or about October 27, 2009, that he did take deposits in the amount of $335.00 in United States currency from the U.S. Bank skywalk branch in Des Moines Iowa. Lee admitted that he put the life of bank personnel in jeopardy by using a note during the robbery that stated, “I am armed.”

Lee further admitted that on October 28, 2009, he took monies from the U.S. Bank, Euclid branch, in Des Moines, also placing that banks personnel in jeopardy by using a note that stated, “I am armed.” Lee received $3,000.00 in United States currency from this robbery.

This investigation was conducted by the Des Moines Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigations. It was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
