Camanche, Iowa Woman Indicted for Theft from Clinton Schools

DAVENPORT, IA—On September 21, 2010, a federal indictment was returned against Denisa Babcock, age 36, of Camanche, Iowa, charging her with theft from a local government agency or organization receiving federal funds. The indictment alleges that from approximately November 18, 2005 to December 11, 2009, while an accountant at the Clinton Community School District, Babcock embezzled, stole, or converted to her own use property in value of $5,000 or more belonging to the Clinton Community School District.

The public is reminded that the allegations in the indictment are mere accusations and all persons are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. If convicted on this charge, Babcock faces a potential penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, or both fine and imprisonment; a period of supervised release of not more than three years; a special assessment of $100; restitution; and forfeiture.

This investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Clinton Police Department, and is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern Distist of Iowa.
