18-Year-Old Sentenced for Assault Causing Serious Bodily Injury

United States Attorney Deborah R. Gilg and the Federal Bureau of Investigation announce the following information for the attention of the media:

Event Triggering this Release:

John Hulit, 18, was sentenced for Assault Causing Serious Bodily Injury. The Honorable Joseph F. Bataillon sentenced Hulit to 21 months’ imprisonment. After his release from prison, Hulit will begin a three year term of supervised release.

On 8/6/09, Hulit beat and kicked a man with whom he had been engaged in a verbal argument. Hulit was interviewed and admitted to assaulting the victim. He estimated that he punched the victim approximately 20 times in the face and kicked him approximately 50 times in the face when he was down. Hulit also stated that he struck the victim one time in the torso with a chair.

Following the beating, the victim was life-flighted to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. He suffered a broken nose, concussion, facial lacerations and contusions that required stitching. Additionally, the swelling to his face was so extensive he could not open his eyes for days.
