U.S. Attorney’s Office October 09, 2009 |
United States Attorney Deborah R. Gilg, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Omaha Nation Law Enforcement Services, announce the following information for the attention of the media:
Event Triggering this Release:
Edward Lovejoy, age 25 of Macy, was sentenced to 12 years in prison by Joseph F. Bataillon, Chief United States District Judge, following his convictions for assault on a federal officer, using a firearm during the commission of a federal crime, and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
On April 15, 2009, a female member of the Omaha Tribe got into an argument with her boyfriend, Edward Lovejoy, who was also an enrolled member of the Omaha Tribe. The victim reported that Lovejoy began choking her and then threw her down on the bed. Lovejoy hit her in the left side of the face and head with his fist. The assault continued on into the bathroom as Lovejoy continued punching her in the face with his fists and kicking her with his boots. The victim, in addition to suffering bruises and contusions, sustained three broken ribs as a result of the beating.
An officer with the Omaha Nation Law Enforcement Services went to Lovejoy’s location to investigate the assault. Lovejoy refused to surrender himself or allow the officer to place him under arrest. A physical altercation ensued wherein the officer ended up on the couch with Lovejoy on top of him. Lovejoy pulled the officer’s gun from its holster and pointed it at the officer’s chest. Lovejoy then pointed the gun out the front door of the residence and fired three shots at the officer’s cruiser before, once again, pointing the weapon at the officer. Lovejoy eventually surrendered the gun and was placed under arrest.
