Norfolk FBI to Train with Local Law Enforcement Partners at Old Dominion University

FBI Norfolk May 14, 2009
  • Community Outreach Specialist Vanessa Torres (757) 455-0100

Special Agent in Charge Alex J. Turner, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Norfolk; Chief Bruce Marquis, Norfolk Police Department; Chief Rudy Burwell, Old Dominion University Police Department; and Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Virginia State Police, announce the following:

The Norfolk Field Office of the FBI, in conjunction with the Norfolk Police Department, Old Dominion Police Department, and Virginia State Police, will be conducting a four-day crisis management training exercise at Old Dominion University from 12:00 a.m. May 17, 2010, to 5:00 p.m. May 20, 2010. The training will further prepare law enforcement officers for real-life crisis situations and will include reality-based scenarios involving air and ground emergency response vehicles, special tactical teams, and volunteer role players.

During the four-day training period, Old Dominion University staff, students, and the general public can expect to hear sirens and audible commands from law enforcement officers; however, there will be no risk to public safety as the training area will be confined to a specific restricted area on the campus of Old Dominion and access will be limited to law enforcement personnel only.

The public is reminded that these are simulated exercises and not real-life situations; therefore, there will be no need for concern in the training area. Should any emergency situation develop elsewhere on the campus of Old Dominion, normal emergency reporting protocols to 911 or the Old Dominion Police Department should be followed.

In the interest of public safety, there will be no public access to the training area via air or ground.

This press release is being provided to all media outlets for the information of the Old Dominion University staff, students, and the general public to avoid confusion or concern and to ensure their safety during the training period.

All media questions regarding this release should be directed to Vanessa Torres, FBI at 757-455-2595.
