FBI New York Honors Dr. Jay Findling at Award Ceremony

FBI New York November 23, 2010

On November 22, 2010, the FBI’s New York Division honored an outstanding member of the community with the Director’s Community Leadership Award. This special award, which will be presented on behalf of the FBI Director in a national ceremony next March, was formally created in 1990 as a way to honor individuals and organizations for their efforts in combating crime, terrorism, drugs, and violence in America.

Dr. Jay Findling, this year’s award recipient, was recognized during the eighth annual Citizens’ Academy graduation ceremony for his participation in gang prevention and education programs that have significantly impacted the community.

Dr. Findling, an urban educator in New York for over 15 years and former FBI New York Citizens’ Academy graduate, is a trained expert in instructing professionals on school based discipline, intervention programs, and gang awareness. In his work as an educator, he has devoted much time and attention to working with federal, city, and state law enforcement agencies and community groups. A volunteer as New York City regional director of the New York Gang Investigators Association, Dr. Findling is a well sought after presenter who is recognized throughout the community for his support of anti-gang programs.

In response to the growing violent street gang trend throughout New York City and its surrounding areas, the FBI’s New York Office has devoted many resources to developing an effective anti-gang initiative. Currently, more than 4,500 students and over 1,000 adults have attended presentations created for this purpose. Dr. Findling has been a major contributor in developing these presentations, lending his extensive expertise and support.

FBI Assistant Director in Charge Janice K. Fedarcyk said, “This evening, we honor a true friend and partner to the FBI. We strongly believe Dr. Findling’s contributions to the educational system, sincere concern for the safety of our schools, and strong involvement in anti-gang education programs have made a lasting impact on the youth of our society. We are honored to recognize him here this evening.”

In accepting his award, Dr. Findling said, “I am proud to support the efforts of the FBI in New York as we collectively work to influence the children of our community by showing them the way to a bright and promising future. I am honored to accept the Director’s Community Leadership Award and look forward to our continued partnership.”
