FBI Director Christopher Wray has named Troy A. Sowers as special agent in charge of the Knoxville Field Office. Mr. Sowers most recently served as chief of staff in the Deputy Director’s Office at FBI Headquarters.

Mr. Sowers entered on duty with the FBI in 1997 as a special agent and was first assigned to the Seattle Field Office, Tacoma Resident Agency, where he worked a variety of violations, including violent crime, white-collar crime, and terrorism.

In 2005, Mr. Sowers was promoted to supervisory special agent in the Counterterrorism Division at FBI Headquarters. During his time there, Mr. Sowers served in a joint duty assignment at the Central Intelligence Agency.  

In 2008, Mr. Sowers was promoted to supervisor of the domestic terrorism squad in the Sacramento Field Office, followed by an assignment as the supervisor of the international terrorism squad. In 2015, he was promoted to assistant special agent in charge for the Sacramento Field Office, responsible for the intelligence and administrative programs. 

Mr. Sowers has bachelor’s degrees in accounting and theology, and he received a master’s degree in homeland security studies from the Naval Postgraduate School. Prior to joining the FBI, Mr. Sowers was an auditor for a major accounting firm and served four years as an enlisted member of the United States Air Force.
