Steven L. Gomez Named SAC of Los Angeles’ Counterterrorism Division

Steven L. Gomez has been named Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the Counterterrorism Division in Los Angeles. Director Robert S. Mueller, III appointed him to this position to replace Janice K. Fedarcyk, who was selected as SAC of the Philadelphia Division. Most recently, Mr. Gomez served as a Section Chief in the FBI’s Directorate of Intelligence.

Mr. Gomez entered on duty as a special agent with the FBI in November 1990. Upon completion of training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, he was assigned to the Los Angeles Division where he investigated drug, gang, and violent crime matters. Mr. Gomez specialized in managing multiple court-ordered wiretaps in complex criminal enterprise cases.

In September 1998, Mr. Gomez was promoted to FBI Headquarters as a supervisor in the Safe Streets and Gang Unit in the Criminal Investigative Division. In October 2000, Mr. Gomez transferred to the Los Angeles Division as a squad supervisor and managed the Los Angeles Gang Task Force, the Public Corruption/Civil Rights Squad, and the Al Qaeda Counterterrorism Squad. In April 2004, Mr. Gomez was designated the Acting Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) for the Counterterrorism Program in Los Angeles, a position he held until his departure from the Los Angeles field office.

In January 2005, Mr. Gomez was promoted to ASAC for the St. Louis Division. In this capacity, he had oversight responsibility for all National Security Branch programs, to include Counterterrorism, Counterintelligence, Intelligence, and all investigative matters in the resident agency territories. From January to February 2007, Mr. Gomez was Acting Section Chief for the National Security Reports and Requirements Section in the Directorate of Intelligence, a position he permanently assumed in May 2007.

Born and raised in the Los Angeles area, Mr. Gomez graduated in June 1989 with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and a minor in criminal justice from California State University, Polytechnic Pomona. While attending college, Mr. Gomez worked as a revenue agent for the Internal Revenue Service. Following graduation, Mr. Gomez served as a police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department. Mr. Gomez is married and has four children.
