New Information on City of Boston Threat

Washington, D.C. January 25, 2005
  • FBI National Press Office (202) 324-3691

Washington, D.C. - After a thorough investigation of information involving a reported terrorist threat against the City of Boston, Massachusetts, it has been determined that the threat had no credibility. While the threat information proceeded from criminal activity (an alien smuggling organization) there were in fact no terrorist plans or activity under way. Because the criminal investigation is ongoing, no further details can be provided at this time. The FBI would, however, like to particularly thank Mexican law enforcement agencies for their assistance in resolving this issue.

Please be advised that the FBI is, accordingly, withdrawing its request for information from the public that would lead to locating the 13 persons identified in its 1/22/05 press release.

This case exemplifies the determination of the FBI, DHS, and the entire U.S. intelligence and law enforcement communities to track down and resolve all possible threats involving terrorist activity. As threat information from many sources is received, it is analyzed and appropriately shared with our law enforcement partners, including cases of unconfirmed and uncorroborated information whose credibility is difficult to assess. Only by so doing can we hope to prevent terrorist acts before they are launched.
