John A. Strong Named Special Agent in Charge of Charlotte Division

Director Robert S. Mueller, III has named John A. Strong special agent in charge of the FBI’s Charlotte Division. Mr. Strong most recently served as a deputy assistant director in the Criminal Justice Information Services Division in Clarksburg, West Virginia.

Mr. Strong began his career as a special agent with the FBI in 1990 and reported to the Charlotte Division’s Fayetteville Resident Agency. In November 1997, Mr. Strong was promoted to supervisory special agent of the Major Theft/Government Reservation Crime Unit in the Criminal Investigative Division at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C. In this role, Mr. Strong served as the program manager for the Jewelry Theft and Art Theft Programs, to include the National Stolen Art File. He also oversaw all major theft and government reservation crime investigations in the Northeastern region of the United States.

In March 2000, Mr. Strong was promoted to field supervisor in the Knoxville Division, where he was responsible for investigations into violent crime, organized crime, and gangs. He also supervised the division’s Field Intelligence Group.

Mr. Strong was appointed assistant special agent in charge in the Little Rock Division in August 2005. In this capacity, he was responsible for all criminal programs, as well as the cyber program and resident agencies. He later served as the National Security Branch assistant special agent in charge, where he oversaw counterterrorism, counterintelligence, intelligence, security, and support matters.

In August 2008, Mr. Strong was promoted to chief of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) Section in the Criminal Justice Information Services Division. In November 2011, he was promoted to his most recent role as deputy assistant director in the division.

Prior to joining the FBI, Mr. Strong was a trooper with the Virginia State Police assigned to Fairfax County.
