According to the figures released Monday, the estimated number of violent crimes in 2011 declined for the fifth consecutive year. Property crimes also decreased, marking the ninth straight year that the collective estimates for these offenses declined. Full Story
- Headquarters: Justice Department Officials Raise Awareness of Disaster Fraud Hotline
The Department of Justice, the FBI, and the National Center for Disaster Fraud (NCDF) remind the public there is a potential for disaster fraud in the aftermath of a natural disaster. - New Orleans: Businessman Charged with Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud in Aftermath of BP Oil Spill
Bay E. Ingram, whose company provided disaster relief services in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, was charged in a bill of information with conspiracy to commit wire fraud for forging and falsifying documents to receive payment for the use of his company’s helicopter. Full Story
- Charlotte: Two Plead Guilty in Murder-for-Hire Plot
Shkumbin Sherifi and Nevine Elsheikh conspired with each other and Hysen Sherifi to commit murder-for-hire to retaliate against witnesses who provided testimony in Hysen Sherifi’s 2011 trial and prevent their testimony in the subsequent trial of a co-defendant. Full Story
- Kansas City: Retired Police Officer Sentenced to 19 Years for Sexually Exploiting a Minor
Jack Van Matre, a retired police officer, was sentenced to 19 years and seven months in prison for sexually exploiting a minor by secretly videotaping her in order to produce child pornography. Full Story
- Miami: Two Plead Guilty to Charges Relating to Attempted Sale of Stolen Matisse Painting
Pedro Antonio Marcuello Guzman and Maria Martha Elisa Ornelas Lazo pled guilty to charges relating to the July 17, 2012 attempted sale of the stolen Henri Matisse painting “Odalisque in Red Pants” in Miami Beach, Florida. Full Story
- Columbia: Former Lieutenant in Sheriff’s Office Admits to Making False Statements to FBI
Former Colleton County Sheriff’s Lt. Fred Allen Inabinett pled guilty to lying to FBI agents about conversations he had with a known drug dealer in which he revealed law enforcement sensitive information regarding federal investigations taking place in Colleton County. Full Story

Federal agents arrested Syed Qaisar Madad on federal wire fraud charges that allege he ran an investment scheme that raised $49 million from investors who suffered losses of approximately $32 million after he lost millions on bad trades and spent millions on Ponzi payments and personal expenses such as gambling.
