Eric Barnhart Named Special Agent in Charge of the Salt Lake City Division

Director James B. Comey has named Eric Barnhart as the special agent in charge of the Salt Lake City Division. Mr. Barnhart most recently served as special assistant to Director Comey, where he provided counsel on policy and administrative matters to the Director.

Mr. Barnhart began his career as a special agent in 1996. He was first assigned to the Portland Division, where he worked organized crime and drug investigations.

In 1999, Mr. Barnhart was transferred to the Bend resident agency, where he worked all violations within the FBI’s jurisdiction. Mr. Barnhart was promoted in 2006 to supervisory special agent in the Eurasia unit of the Office of International Operations at FBIHQ. In 2008, Mr. Barnhart was promoted to supervisory senior resident agent of the Billings, Montana resident agency of the Salt Lake City Division. In this capacity, he supervised the Billings, Bozeman, Glasgow, and Havre resident agencies and was responsible for all program matters. In 2012, Mr. Barnhart was promoted to assistant special agent in charge of the Portland Division. In this role, he oversaw all criminal and administrative matters.

Prior to joining the FBI, Mr. Barnhart served five years as an artillery officer in the United States Marine Corps. He earned a bachelor of arts in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
