David Miller Named SAC in Portland

David Miller has been named Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the FBI's Portland Division. Director Robert S. Mueller, III, appointed him to this position to replace retired SAC Robert J. Jordan. Most recently, Mr. Miller served as the Section Chief over Internal Investigations for the FBI's Inspection Division.

Mr. Miller entered on duty as a special agent of the FBI in April 1981. Upon completion of training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, he was assigned to the Portland Division were he addressed general investigative assignments. In August 1982, Mr. Miller was transferred to the San Juan Division were he was assigned to public corruption matters. In late 1987, he volunteered to serve as a class counselor for new agent trainees at the FBI Academy before returning to Portland, his preferred assignment.

In 1996, Mr. Miller was designated a Supervisory Special Agent (SSA) in the Portland Division for the White Collar Crime Squad, and later became SSA of the National Security Branch Squad. In 1998, he was assigned as the FBI's lead representative to the security committee organized to address public safety during the Nike World Masters Games. In 1999, he was promoted to FBIHQ where he served in the National Press Office.

In 2000, Mr. Miller returned to San Juan to supervise the National Security Branch Squad. While there, he served as the Acting Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Counterterrorism Program in Puerto Rico, all investigations in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and personnel matters. In 2003, Mr. Miller was promoted to Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the San Francisco Division's Counterterrorism Program and the Bay Area's multi-agency Joint Terrorism Task Force, with responsibility for California coastal counties from Monterey to Del Norte.

In 2006, Mr. Miller was promoted into the federal government's Senior Executive Service and named Section Chief in the FBI's Internal Investigations Section. In this assignment, Mr. Miller provided oversight for the intake process utilized to address all allegations of misconduct levied against individual FBI employees. He was also responsible for coordination and completion of all internal affairs investigative cases for the FBI.

Born in Berkeley and raised in Eureka, California, by an FBI family, Mr. Miller earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Humboldt State University in 1976. He taught high school in Lemoore, California, and Amity, Oregon, and worked briefly for the Yamhill County Oregon Educational Service District. Mr. Miller nearly completed a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Portland State University before the FBI called him to service in late 1980. Mr. Miller and his wife, Marla, are the parents of three adult children.
