Thomas Browne Named Assistant Director of FBI’s Training Division

Director Robert S. Mueller, III has named Thomas J. Browne assistant director of the FBI’s Training Division. In this role, he is responsible for all FBI training programs, including the new agent and intelligence analyst training programs, as well as the National Academy, which provides training to federal, state, local and international police executives.

Mr. Browne entered on duty as a special agent with the FBI in August 1985. Upon completion of training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, he was assigned to the Las Vegas Division, where he investigated white collar crime matters. In April 1990, he transferred to the Newark Field Office and later to the Franklin Township Resident Agency (RA), where he investigated organized crime and white collar crime cases. During his time in Franklin Township, he was the case agent in a public corruption matter that resulted in the successful prosecution of a corrupt prosecutor; it received widespread media coverage.

In July 1996, he was promoted to FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C., where he served in various units within the Financial Crimes Section of the Criminal Investigative Division.  In July 1998, Mr. Browne transferred to the Knoxville Field Office, Johnson City RA, as a senior supervisory resident agent, where he served through October 2004. While in Johnson City, he oversaw many significant investigations, including the dismantlement of drug trafficking organizations operating within East Tennessee, as well as a variety of high-profile white collar crime investigations. Mr. Browne also served as the acting assistant special agent in charge on numerous occasions and, in this capacity, managed all investigative programs in the field office territory. He also served as the Domestic Terrorism Program coordinator for approximately three years.

In November 2004, he was selected as the assistant special agent in charge of the Little Rock Field Office, where he oversaw all programs.

In June 2007, Mr. Browne entered the Senior Executive Service ranks and served as section chief of the Intelligence, N-DEx, and Global Operations Section, Criminal Justice Information Services Division (CJIS), in Clarksburg, West Virginia. In this capacity, he had executive oversight for the development of the Law Enforcement National Data Exchange (N-DEx), as well as the Global Initiatives Unit, CJIS Division Intelligence Group and the Crime Analysis Research and Development Unit. From December 2007 through March 2008, he also served as the acting deputy assistant director of the Policy Analysis and Liaison Branch at CJIS.

In May 2008, Director Mueller appointed Mr. Browne as the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Little Rock Field office. Mr. Browne oversaw many significant investigations, including the shooting of two soldiers at a recruiting station in Little Rock, various noteworthy public corruption matters and the investigation and prosecution of Tony Alamo.

In June 2010, Mr. Browne was promoted to deputy assistant director of the Training Division, where he served until his appointment to assistant director.

Mr. Browne earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1982 and a juris doctor degree from Duquesne University in Pennsylvania in 1985.  He has been married to his wife, Deborah, for 24 years.
