Roger C. Stanton Named Special Agent in Charge of Birmingham Division
Director James B. Comey has named Roger C. Stanton special agent in charge of the FBI’s Birmingham Division. Mr. Stanton most recently served as section chief of the Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices (C-IED) section in the Critical Incident Response Group (CIRG).
During his time in CIRG, Mr. Stanton also served as the Department of Justice senior executive for the U.S. Government’s C-IED Joint Program Office, which implements the Nation’s Counter IED Strategy. In addition, he served as the on-scene commander of the FBI special event security support to the Sochi Winter Olympic Games in February 2014.
Mr. Stanton began his career as a special agent with the FBI in 1995. He was first assigned to the Columbia Division, where he investigated violent crime and counterterrorism matters. Following 9/11, Mr. Stanton led the first South Carolina Joint Terrorism Task Force, directing counterterrorism investigative operations in South Carolina.
In 2008, Mr. Stanton was promoted to assistant inspector at FBI Headquarters (FBIHQ). In this position, he served as a team leader, responsible for the review of FBIHQ program management and field office operations. Mr. Stanton returned to the Columbia Division in 2009 as the supervisory special agent for criminal and national security computer intrusion investigations.
Mr. Stanton was promoted in 2010 to assistant special agent in charge of the cyber and criminal branch of the Atlanta Division. His responsibilities included oversight of many programs, including financial crimes, violent crimes, public corruption, and cyber crime.
During his career, Mr. Stanton has participated in several high-profile investigations, including the 9/11 attacks and the 1998 American Embassy bombing in Nairobi, Kenya.
Mr. Stanton is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and served in the United States Navy as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal officer from 1987 to 1995.
