The FBI Recognizes Those Who #ServeWithSTEM
On November 8, the Federal Bureau of Investigation recognizes the importance of the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
STEM education prepares future leaders to solve the complex problems of the world—and also prepares those future leaders for FBI careers. Throughout the FBI, STEM skills are used to solve a range of problems, from determining the gender of a 4,000-year-old mummy to performing a study on soil to link a subject’s shovel to a location of investigative interest to identifying vulnerabilities and the need to better secure personal health data. The disciplines and the skills developed in the STEM fields are vital tools from which the FBI can draw on to fulfill our mission to protect the American people and uphold the Constitution.
The FBI has long lauded the benefits of a diverse workforce that has representatives from the various communities we serve with a range of backgrounds and skills. Innovation in the STEM fields has always been a part of the FBI’s work: The threat does not stand still and neither can the FBI. Personnel with STEM skills and training are an integral part of the FBI and are embedded across all 56 field offices in the United States, in legal attaché offices overseas, and throughout FBI Headquarters. The FBI continues to expand the career opportunities available in the STEM fields, including telecommunications specialists, data analysts, and digital operations specialists. Furthermore, the FBI implemented a six-month cyber curriculum comprised of classroom and on-the-job training for our cadre of special agents, intelligence analysts, and professional staff with skills outside of cyber careers.
The FBI also proactively seeks to create and strengthen relationships in the communities we serve and is working to expand the Cyber High School STEM Program, which aims to prepare students for STEM entry-level college courses and facilitate early exposure to cybersecurity.
The ever-evolving nature of crime requires law enforcement to be intrepid and creative in the global fight for justice. We must stay ahead of the threat. Those who #ServeWithSTEM have an important role to play in this mission.
