Craig Fair Named Special Agent in Charge of the San Francisco Field Office

Director Christopher Wray has named Craig Fair as the special agent in charge of the San Francisco Field Office. Most recently, Mr. Fair served as the office’s deputy special agent in charge.

Mr. Fair joined the FBI as a special agent in 1998 and was assigned to the San Francisco Field Office, where he worked counterintelligence matters. In 2005, he was promoted to supervisory special agent and oversaw a counterintelligence squad.

In 2008, Mr. Fair moved to FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C., to serve as a unit chief in the Counterintelligence Division. He oversaw the Bureau’s domestic and extraterritorial investigations and operations countering foreign intelligence collection matters. He served as acting section chief of the Clandestine Services for most of 2011, before returning to San Francisco as the assistant special agent in charge of the Counterterrorism Branch. Mr. Fair oversaw San Francisco’s counterterrorism program, the Joint Terrorism Task Force, the Special Weapons and Tactics Program, and several other programs.

Mr. Fair was promoted again in 2013 to section chief of the Executive Staff Section of the National Security Branch at FBI Headquarters. He also served as the special assistant to the NSB executive assistant director. In 2014, Mr. Fair was promoted to deputy assistant director of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate, where he led the FBI’s efforts in preventing, countering, and investigating threats of terrorism or proliferation involving chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive weapons.

He returned to San Francisco for a second turn as the assistant special agent in charge of the Counterterrorism Program in 2016 and was named the deputy special agent in charge in 2017.

Mr. Fair earned a Bachelor of Arts in political economics from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and a Master of Arts in criminal justice from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York.
