Stephen Morris: Law enforcement is a dangerous profession. Women and men that take on that profession put their lives at risk every day trying to protect their communities.

Halpern: I’m Mollie Halpern of the Bureau with FBI, This Week. The Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted Report, or LEOKA, shows that out of the 76 men and women killed, 27 of them died feloniously. Assistant Director Stephen Morris of the Criminal Justice Information Services Division says at the time of their deaths the victim officers were ambushed, making arrests, and…

Morris: …conducting investigations, responding to disturbance calls, and even conducting traffic stops.

Halpern: The LEOKA report also shows that nearly 50,000 officers were assaulted while on the job. The offenders…

Morris: …were using anything from firearms, to knives, to their hands or their feet to assault the officers.

Halpern: LEOKA is a program that uses data and training to reduce deaths and assaults of law enforcement officers in America and abroad.
