Mollie Halpern: Statistics from the FBI’s preliminary Uniform Crime Report for 2010 show violent and property crimes have decreased across the nation when compared with data from 2009.
Daniel Roberts: Violent crime is down 5.5 percent and property crime down almost 3 percent.
Halpern: I’m Mollie Halpern of the Bureau, and you’re listening to “FBI, This Week.” The figures serve as one of the country’s leading social indicators on the fluctuations in crime levels. But, as Assistant Director of the Criminal Information Services Division Daniel Roberts points out, the Bureau is cautious about drawing conclusions about what the data means.
Roberts: It’s very difficult to rank cities against cities and states against states just looking at the numbers, you have to delve deeper into the numbers than that.
Halpern: The FBI does track crime trends and redirects resources to address increases in offenses.
Roberts: We would establish task forces quickly in areas where we noticed there was a huge spike in gang violence for example.
Halpern: Thanks for listening to “FBI, This Week.”
