Mollie Halpern: FBI statistics show 95 law enforcement officers across the country were killed in the line of duty last year.

David Cuthbertson: The victim officers averaged an age of 38 with law enforcement experience of 12 years. These were men and women in the country serving their communities day in and day out.

Halpern: I’m Mollie Halpern of the Bureau, and this is FBI, This Week. According to the FBI’s Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted Report, 48 officers were killed feloniously—which means their lives were taken as a direct result of the actions of a subject. The number of officers feloniously killed last year is a decrease of 24 deaths when compared to the year before. David Cuthbertson is the assistant director of the Criminal Justice Information Services Division…

Cuthbertson: The highest number of law enforcement officers feloniously killed resulted from an arrest situation.

Halpern: The FBI tries to reduce law enforcement deaths and assaults here and abroad through our officer safety awareness training.

Cuthbertson: This training provides potentially lifesaving information to help law enforcement personnel enhance their situational awareness during activities such as arrests, foot pursuits, and other high-risk encounters.
