Mollie Halpern: An FBI pilot project rolled out to address the growing threat of Internet crime is seeing success.

I’m Mollie Halpern, and this is FBI, This Week. The project is a new way to share analyzed and detailed intelligence among all levels of law enforcement. Precise intelligence is collected from the Internet Crime Complaint Center—or IC3—which receives Internet-related complaints from the public. The intelligence is sent to FBI cyber task forces across the country. Supervisory Special Agent Herbert Stapleton…

Herbert Stapleton: We know we already have a capable group of state and local and federal investigators who are familiar with Internet crime cases, who know how to work them—and they’re ready to take off with it.

Halpern: The FBI and local law enforcement teamed up for this project to ensure investigations and prosecutions of Internet fraud cases don’t fall through the cracks.

Stapleton: Blending those resources together and putting a focus back on the Internet crime threat, we could better address what’s going on.

Halpern: The initiative began in Salt Lake City and was so successful the FBI recently expanded it to Texas.

Stapleton: The more area of the country that this effort entails, the better it will work. The plan is to continue to expand until we have widespread coverage of the country.

Halpern: Report Internet crime at www.ic3.gov.
