Mollie Halpern: The FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics report shows that there were 6,222 criminal incidents involving more than 7,000 offenses reported in 2011.

I’m Mollie Halpern of the Bureau, and this is FBI, This Week.

The offenses were bias-motivated toward a particular race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or physical or mental disability. Assistant Director David Cuthbertson of the Criminal Justice Information Services Division says the biggest take-away of the report is…

David Cuthbertson: It was the first time that hate crimes with sexual orientation biases were greater than hate crimes with a religious bias.

Halpern: 20.8 percent of incidents were motivated by a sexual orientation bias while 19.8 percent were motivated by a religious bias. Racial bias incidents encompass the highest percentage of reported hate crimes.

Cuthbertson: There were 6,216 single-bias incidents of which 46.9 percent were motivated by a racial bias.
