Mollie Halpern: The FBI’s annual Crime in the United States report reveals the number of violent crimes decreased 0.2 percent in 2014 when compared to the year before. During the same time period, property crimes dipped by 4.3 percent from where they were in 2013.

The report is a compilation of data voluntarily submitted by local and state law enforcement agencies. New in the report this year is data from the FBI and other federal agencies. John Derbas is a section chief at the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division…

John Derbas: The numbers for the FBI's arrests for human trafficking for 2014 was 562.

Halpern: The report includes a message from FBI Director James Comey, who stresses his support for crime data modernization. Mr. Comey encourages all law enforcement agencies to participate in the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System, or NIBRS.

Derbas: NIBRS data provides a clearer and more complete picture of the nation’s crime.
