Mollie Halpern: The collaboration between the FBI and the Department of Defense on the advancement of biometrics reaches a new level with the recent opening of the FBI’s Biometric Technology Center, or BTC.

FBI Executive Assistant Director of the Science and Technology Branch, Amy Hess, says the BTC will foster joint biometric investigations.

Amy Hess: Anything from terrorist investigations to criminal investigations, anything that might rely on biometric technology where we’re collecting things like fingerprints or DNA or iris recognition, voice patterns, facial recognition, palm prints—anything like that with respect to biometrics. We may need that information in order to solve a case.

Halpern: The Biometric Technology Center will also help move biometric tools and technologies more quickly from the lab into the hands of those who protect America and her people.

The BTC, which is located in Clarksburg, West Virginia, is the FBI’s first building to achieve gold certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a green building certification program.
