Mollie Halpern: The FBI is enhancing its training programs for law enforcement on active shooter and mass casualty incidents—like the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Katherine Schweit: We’re looking for ways to better prepare law enforcement to not only prevent these situations, but respond, react, and save lives.

Halpern: I’m Mollie Halpern, and this is FBI, This Week. Special agents in the Bureau’s 56 field offices throughout the country are available to provide specialized tactical training to state, local, tribal, and campus police officers free of charge. Supervisory Special Agent Katherine Schweit says better-trained officers means safer citizens….

Schweit: It’s training that’s specifically designed to train the first officer on the scene to go into where the shooter is and to neutralize that threat. That’s what saves lives.

Halpern: The FBI is also hosting tabletop exercises and meeting with thousands of chiefs, sheriffs and other command staff to share best practices and lessons learned from recent tragedies.

Schweit: It’s important to us that local law enforcement know what resources are available and that they call on us.

Halpern: For more information, visit www.fbi.gov
