Mollie Halpern: An American-born man is sentenced to 20 years in prison for attempting to provide material support to al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP.

Bryan S. Cannon: Stopping people like this sends a message that things need to be done to stop these people from going overseas and conducting violent acts.

Halpern: I’m Mollie Halpern of the FBI, and this is Gotcha. An FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force investigation uncovered e-mails between Barry Bujol and now-deceased leader of AQAP, Anwar al-Awlaki. Case agent Bryan Cannon says Bujol asked the former U.S.-based imam…

Cannon: …how he, as a Muslim convert, could support jihad.

Halpern: Al-Awlaki provided Bujol with a document entitled “42 Ways of Supporting Jihad.” Bujol intended to travel overseas to train at a terrorist camp and to provide AQAP with money and other resources. The FBI and its law enforcement partners arrested Bujol as he tried to leave through the port of Houston.

Cannon: It took a lot of agencies to make this happen.

Halpern: For more details about this case, visit www.fbi.gov. This has been the FBI’s closed case of the week.
