Mollie Halpern: It’s a case that shows the FBI’s resolve to protect the United States from a terrorist attack.

I’m Mollie Halpern and this is Gotcha, the FBI’s closed case of the week.

The FBI and its law enforcement partners opened a case on Daniel Patrick Boyd, two of his sons, and their co-conspirators because of their plans to wage jihad on Americans here and abroad—including members of the U.S. military. Boyd, a North Carolina man, was the leader of the so-called Triangle Terror Group. Special Agent Paul Minella says they shared a radical ideology.

Paul Minella: Spoke about committing jihad…

Halpern: Investigators tracked the men across the U.S. and six foreign countries. Sources, surveillance, and FBI profilers were used in the investigation.

Minella: It was truly an effort that spanned the entire scope of what the FBI can bring to bear on a case.

Halpern: After months of planning, the FBI’s elite Hostage Rescue Team arrested Boyd and his co-conspirators in 2009. Boyd was sentenced for terrorism violations to 18 years in prison.
