Searching for Answers

In January 2020, in the Chesser Island Road Landfill in Folkston, Georgia, investigators from federal, state, and local law enforcement worked together to locate the remains of missing Clay County woman Susan Mauldin.

Two searchers stoop to inspect an item that stood out among the common debris. Hundreds of hours were spent over 10 days combing through tons of garbage to locate the remains of Susan Mauldin.

Investigators monitor each bucket that is excavated from the area of interest in the search for missing Clay County woman Susan Mauldin.

A Tyvek coverall, half-face respirator, and safety glasses are among the personal protective equipment issued to each investigator to help keep them safe from contaminants while working in shifts during the search at the Chesser Island Road Landfill.

A bucket of garbage dug from the area of interest is loaded onto a dump truck to be spread in thin layers, or "decks," for search crews to comb through during the search.

Each bucket taken from the area of interest of interest was observed and counted by investigators at the search.

This historic case marked the FBI's first successful landfill search for covered remains and underscores the Bureau’s unwavering commitment to justice for victims, said FBI Special Agent Lauren Regucci, senior lead of the Jacksonville Evidence Response Team.
